- In the United States, it refers to a filling station that also offers such services as oil change and mechanical repairs to automobiles.

- In Canada, both of the above are meanings associated with service station.
- In Australia and New Zealand, it refers to any filling station, usually known as a petrol station, and is often abbreviated as "servo".
- In France, "Station service" refers to filling station even if no services are proposed.
